Flowing with Holy Spirit

Think about this for a moment. Is what you’re pursuing in your life right now God’s will for you?

I was having a conversation with the Lord one day and the revelation that I received was that doing the good thing doesn’t always mean that you’re doing the right thing. When it comes to flowing with Holy Spirit, in order for you to flow with Him, you first have to surrender to Him. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “go with the flow”, you know that it means to give up control and relax. Don’t try and alter the plan but just go with it. God has so much love for you that He will not force His will on you. He will guide you according to His will for your life only after you let go of your will. When you let go of your will, you give Holy Spirit the opportunity to guide you on the right path.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

John 16:13

You can be doing something that’s good but, if it is outside of what God wants you to do, then it is not the right thing. Here’s an example. You can decide that you want to go live in another country and serve on a missions team helping orphaned children. That’s a really good thing! But although it is good, is it God’s will? You can decide that you want to go into politics to help your community. That is a good thing but is it God’s will? I believe that as Christians, all of us make the mistake sometimes of thinking that we are supposed to be doing everything. We believe that we should take every good opportunity that comes our way if it is for the Kingdom of God. But where does that leave Holy Spirit and how can He fulfill His role in your life if you never consult Him?

Holy Spirit will always guide you to the right thing which takes the guesswork out of everything! I have caused myself so much anxiety too many times because I thought that the good Christian thing to do was to say “yes” all of the time. But what I realized is that I am not the fixer, the Lord is, and my responsibility is to follow Him along the path that He has set out for me. And the same is true for you. If you’re stressed and burned out, it could be because you’re not flowing with Holy Spirit – you’ve gotten out of alignment with what is right for your assignment and this season of your life.

Here are a few tips to help you flow with Holy Spirit:

Be quick to listen and slow to speak

You don’t have to give an immediate answer to everything. Some opportunities are obviously not right for you but, others you may need to take some to pray about and that’s okay.

Check your heart

Is what you’re doing for the glory of God or the glory of yourself? Who are you wanting to make famous through your life?

Be intentional about spending time with God

You can’t effectively follow a voice that you don’t know. The way you learn to hear the voice of God is through time with Him.

Submit all things to God

When you submit all things to the Lord, you learn how to flow with Holy Spirit, and when that happens, He can lead you in the right direction.

Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him,

And He shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37:5

Flow with Holy Spirit and follow the path that has been set before you!
